Chris has been a regular visitor to Drogheda for some years, and these performances were recorded between 2012 and 2014.

The album is called Among Friends and is available now on iTunes and Google Play. The CD version will be launched at the Drogheda Traditional Music Festival this coming November.

Threads of Fine Gold – Songs from the Drogheda Singing Gathering 2013

Threads of Fine Gold – Songs from the Drogheda Singing Gathering 2013

In February 2013 Drogheda played host to one of the year’s most successful singing festivals. Threads of Fine Gold – Songs from the Drogheda Singing Gathering 2013 is a new CD of songs recorded live at singing sessions in the town that weekend and is a celebration of the unaccompanied singing tradition at its best.

The CD will be launched on Saturday 22nd February at the Governor’s House, Millmount, Drogheda between 7.30 and 9pm. This will be followed by a singing session in Tí Cairbre, North Strand, Drogheda.

Drogheda has a long-established tradition of singing and is associated with the names of source singers such as Pap Usher and Mary Ann Carolan, both of whom possessed a rich store of tragic, comic and occasional songs such as Bonny Light Horseman, Wild Rover and The Wedding of Sweet Baltray. Songs sung in harmony have been popularised in the town by local groups such as The Voice Squad and Sunday’s Gate Quartet. A regular Wednesday night singing session takes place in Tí Cairbre and in the Droichead Arts Centre. These two venues hosted many of the sessions of the Drogheda Singing Gathering – including an all-night session in the Arts Centre. Other sessions were held in historical sites such as Newgrange, Oldbridge, Millmount and the Tholsel. The weekend was rounded off with a concert in the Barbican Theatre which featured The Unthanks, Martin Carthy and The Voice Squad.
